Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. The Roeder House, Building #16, located on Lot #16 and on a portion of Lot #17 of the Wager Six Acre Reservation, was built in stages and appears to have incorporated portions of other structures standing on the site prior to its construction. The initial portion was built against the north end of the Susan Dewney House, Building #15, employing that structure as its south wall. The Downey House was constructed in 1838-39 and sets the earliest date to which the construction of the Roeder House could be ascribed.
