North Wall Masonry Repair: Bldg. 3, Lower Town

Riddo R. 1998. North Wall Masonry Repair: Bldg. 3, Lower Town. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Denver Service Center, Denver, Colorado

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This report details the masonry repairs performed on the north wall of Building No. 3 in the Lower Town area of Harpers Ferry. The project to repair the north wall, Building No. 3, was undertaken during the months of November 1997 and through January, February, and March 1998, in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia. Project objectives to arrest brick deterioration caused by trapped rising damp were resolved by removing the interior flaking plaster layers and paint by removing the exterior hard Portland cement stucco, replacing crumbling brick units, repointing all joints with soft mortar (1:1:6), and applying three coats of soft, flexible, high lime content stucco on the exterior surface. Restoration Specialist Renzo Riddo of the Denver Service Center directed the masons and advised provision of weep and drain areas in the wall. Work was performed by Harpers Ferry park day-labor masons, project funded under the flood/storm recovery program. By the date of this report, Building No . 3 north wall shows evidence of being dry and stable; the repairs allowing for moisture movement and evaporation from the structure, proving a successful stabilization.
