This Historic Structure Report concerns the Two-Story Barn (HB-3) at Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site. The main barn probably consists of an original, late 1870s-1880s, open ramada that J. L. Hubbell subs~quently enclosed with stone masonry walls in the 1890s. The original construction date for the blacksmith and storeroom components remains uncertain. Historic photographs indicate that the barn reached its current configuration by 1915-1920. The structure functioned as a barn (housing the freight hauling mules) and blacksmith shop, for storerooms, and as an automotive vehicle repair shop. Sirice the National Park Service assumed management of the site, the barn has provided site I interpretation and storage and exhibit space for historic wagons and farm implements. More recently, the barn has provided feed and tack storage for the park's horses and mule. Current and proposed uses include continued interpretation of the structure's main barn and blacksmith shop and storage. The park prohibits use of the loft because of the floor's limited structural capacity. The south storeroom provides for storage of maintenance materials. The north storeroom contains a Bally building for climate controlled storage of documents. Uses that provide the most human occupancy offer the best protection for the structure because there would be more likelihood of detection of building problems and notification of maintenance staff. Park planning documents have consistently called for interpretation of the barn. Continued interpretive and storage functions will provide appropriate and compatible uses. The Bally building raises concerns because the mechanical equipment that serves it imposes the vibration loads on the structure and noise intrusions into the historic scene. It also obstructs some components of the fire suppression and fire detection system and prevents visual inspection of the displaced wall portion at building line 2. This report recommends removal of the Bally building and relocation of the climate controlled storage.
