"The conference was organized around a series of concurrent symposia and panel discussions, and public lectures. The three panel discussion sessions, five symposiums, and the two sessions that combined both presentation methods examined multiple aspects of the intertwining of heritage, community, and contemporary society. These include indigenous, public, and scholarly interpretation of cultural sites, island environment and climate change, indigenous heritage research and management, oral tradition and archaeology, innovative and practical approaches to sustainable heritage tourism, community involvement in natural and cultural heritage management, the role that museums must play in Pacific Island developing nations, and strategies for merging natural and cultural resource management for sustainable development." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Bureau of Arts and Culture, Palau Historic Preservation Office, Government of Palau, Republic of Palau, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of Interior (grant number 70-08-21762).
