Field Key to the Vegetation Alliances of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Castle Mountains National Monument
Evens JM, Sikes K, Ratchford J, Stout D. 2020. Field Key to the Vegetation Alliances of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Castle Mountains National Monument. Mojave Desert Network Inventory and Monitoring Program
The National Park Service’s (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program has determined vegetation inventory and mapping to be an important resource for parks; it is one of 12 baseline inventories of natural resources to be completed for all 270 national parks within the NPS I&M program. The Mojave Desert Network Inventory & Monitoring (MOJN I&M) began its process of vegetation inventory in 2009 for four park units as follows: Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), Mojave National Preserve (MOJA), Castle Mountains National Monument (CAMO), and Death Valley National Park (DEVA). Vegetation inventory and mapping is a multi-step process, the final products of which include a vegetation classification, ecological descriptions and field keys of the vegetation types, and geospatial vegetation maps based on the classification. The results of the vegetation classification in a separate document. Based on the classification results, this document provides a field key for the 105 alliances and landform types classified in the project. The field key covers the alliances defined in the three parks, Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), Death Valley National Park (DEVA), and Mojave National Preserve (MOJA), which was adapted from an initial field key for LAKE (Salas et al. 2016).
