Vegetation Alliance Descriptions for Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Castle Mountains National Monument
Evens JM, Sikes K, Hastings D, Schulz K, Ratchford J. 2020. Vegetation Alliance Descriptions for Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Castle Mountains National Monument. Mojave Desert Network Inventory and Monitoring Program
The National Park Service’s (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program has determined vegetation inventory and mapping to be an important resource for parks; it is one of 12 baseline inventories of natural resources to be completed for all 270 national parks within the NPS I&M program. The Mojave Desert Network Inventory & Monitoring (MOJN I&M) began its process of vegetation inventory in 2009 for four park units as follows: Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), Mojave National Preserve (MOJA), Castle Mountains National Monument (CAMO), and Death Valley National Park (DEVA). Vegetation inventory and mapping is a multi-step process, the final products of which include a vegetation classification, ecological descriptions and field keys of the vegetation types, and geospatial vegetation maps based on the classification. The results of the vegetation classification in a separate document. Based on the classification results, this document provides vegetation descriptions for the 105 alliances and landform types classified in the project. The descriptions of the 105 local alliances are arranged within the USNVC hierarchy for DEVA, LAKE, and MOJA. While these alliance descriptions had already been written before the 2016 CAMO fieldwork, sample sizes for new CAMO field surveys have been added to these alliance descriptions (no new alliances unique to CAMO were found).
