The Historic Grounds Study, undertaken by the Public Archaeology Laboratory, Brown University, is one in a series of research projects aimed at providing information necessary for renovating and interpreting the Hudson Valley estate. The goals of the study are: 1) to describe through documentary research the landscape and structural features of the estate grounds of Lindenwald between 1797 and 1957 with major emphasis on the years 1839-1862 when the estate served as the primary residence of Martin Van Buren; 2) to conduct an archeological survey in order to identify and assess the archeological remains associated with structures, facilities and landscaping estate, as well as the artifactual deposits associated with the activities of its former residents; 3) to investigate and interpret anomalies identified through a separate study of the project area by the Remote Sensing Division of the National Park Service that would aid in reconstruction of the historic grounds. The results of this historic grounds study are reported in two volumes. Volume I contains the results of the documentary research. Volume II is a discussion of the results of the archeological investigations.
