Summary of Achievements: "The Archaeological Field School Training in the Republic of Palau will provide sufficient training in field archaeological methodologies to field technicians in the FAS [Freely Associated States] and Territories respective Historic Preservation Office (HPO). During this training, five (5) archaeological technicians from the FAS were able to participate. These include staff from the Marshall Island HPO, Kosrae State HPO, Yap State HPO, Pohnpei State HPO. The field school training is used to measure and evaluate the level of skill and competence of field technicians in carrying out expected responsibilities required by the survey and inventory program. The Contractor of the field school will evaluate the level of skill and competency of each participant and make recommendations on future training required to bring technicians to a level where they are proficient in executing projects in the absences of a professional staff. Despite the ever changing technologies and advanced archaeological methods to conducting fieldwork, it is essential have adequate knowledge in the basic methodologies. Techniques will not only be applicable to terrestrial surveys but can also be used to conduct underwater archaeological surveys." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number 70-12-41-964).
