From the Scope of the Training and the Report: "The staff of the Palau Historic Preservation Office prepared the scope of the training program, which consisted of: 'The Archaeological Field School Training in the Republic of Palau will provide sufficient training in field archaeological methodologies to field technicians in the Freely Associated States (FAS) and Territories respective Historic Preservation Offices. In doing so, the field school training can be used to measure and evaluate the level of skill and competence of field technicians in carrying out expected responsibilities required by the survey and inventory program.' The Field School was originally planned for the July 6-15, 2015 under the supervision of Dr. Mike Carson but he had to withdraw, and Dr. Bill Jeffrey stepped in at the last moment... The objectives of the field school were broken into the following activities: 1) to identify and evaluate historical and cultural resources; 2) to prepare a report of all findings and results of the survey, which will be used to complete more in depth survey and inventories of significant sites; 3) to enhance training of the staff to conduct archaeological reconnaissance surveys; 4) to help in proper planning and management of historical and cultural resources; 5) to help increase nominations of highly significant sites for inclusion in the Palau Register; and 6) to provide necessary technical fieldwork methods to historic preservation staff from the Freely Associated States and US Territories.... The scope of this report is to include a summary of the training implemented, an evaluation of the participants, and a number of recommendations on related issues. The report also includes a summary of the background on the development of the training program to place what was conducted in September 2015 into context with the United States National Park Service (NPS) and the FAS requirements and needs." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
