Summary of Achievements: "The Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation/Historic Preservation Office is fortunate to have a Deputy Historic Preservation Officer who also tasked as a Section Head for the Survey & Inventory/Archaeology Section who was able to lead the Survey of the Ngatpang State Interior with the assistance of the on-board Compliance Officer, Palau Director and Historic Preservation Officer as well as one reliable field assistant from the state of Ngatpang. It was challenging as the weather is unpredictable and the forest is heavily overgrown. Some days we were not able to make it to the field due to bad weather and other days that we got caught by a heavy rain while in the forest. However, we were able to manage to finish whatever we can." From the Purpose: "The purpose of the survey was to conduct an archaeological search of the areas of Ngatpang state that has not been surveyed before or does not have any archaeological documentation in an effort to upgrade the available information in BCHP database. An attempt was made to survey unknown areas to identify the presence or absence of cultural and historical properties. The information is to assist BCHP and states to preserve, protect and better manage the highly significant sites. This is part of the Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation Short Term Plan to identify the historical and cultural resources in Palau as mandated by Title 19 of the Palau National Code. The Archaeological Reconnaissance Survey has objectives as follows: 1) to identify and evaluate potential historical and cultural resources in the interior of Ngatpang State; 2) to prepare a report of all findings and results of the survey, which will be used to complete more in-depth surveys and inventories of significant sites within the interior of Ngatpang State; 3) to enter data into the Archaeological Database; 4) to enhance training of the staff to conduct archaeological and reconnaissance surveys; 5) to help in proper planning and management of historical and cultural resources; and 6) to help increase nominations of highly significant sites for inclusion in the Palau Register..." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Palau Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Cultural and Historical Preservation, Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number 70-13-51964).
