Earthworks Condition Assessment and Stabilization Recommendations, Phase I
Pepper C, Frisbie M, Hasty D, Hitchcock S, Winegar A. 2020. Earthworks Condition Assessment and Stabilization Recommendations, Phase I. Cultural Landscape Management Plans. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
The Earthworks Condition Assessment and Stabilization Recommendations for Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park documents the first phase of a comprehensive existing conditions assessment of the earthworks at the park, in order to evaluate and quantify vulnerability to impacts from trees, environmental, and human activity. Using information collected from field assessments, this report presents observed deficiencies, corrective treatment recommendations, and associated cost estimates. The assessment methods developed and used during this phase 1 project can be applied in other areas as a basis for supporting ongoing, cyclic assessment, project estimating and management of the full range of earthworks at the park. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park was created to protect the site of two Civil War battles of the 1864 Atlanta Campaign and the associated surviving resources of Confederate and Union military activities. The park preserves and protects more than eleven miles of Civil War-era earthworks that constitute some of its most significant resources. High visitation and active recreational use of the park in combination with weathering, aging, and other factors, are contributing to the deterioration and decline in earthwork condition. The condition assessment and stabilization recommendations in this report build on the recommendations in the park’s existing Earthworks Management Plan (EMP) which was prepared in 2012 to provide guidance for managing the fragile Civil War-era resources.
