The Central Alaska Network and Arctic Network shallow lakes protocol monitors water chemistry and physical characteristics of several of the tens of thousands of lakes distributed across the parks in these two networks. In this report, we address three primary goals: (1) identify the best trend model for the outcome and lake, (2) evaluate the environmental covariates that were most highly associated with the outcome at that lake, and (3) provide analysis tools in R for analyzing water chemistry data downloaded from Aquarius. We focus on the four core shallow lakes metrics: temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductivity. We apply four trend models to the daily data as well as two data transformations for data collected at 12 lakes over time. Covariate modeling is conducted to determine if relationships exist with other environmental covariates. This analysis is exploratory and serves to examine approaches to model shallow lakes water chemistry monitoring data as a function of time and/or fine scale (e.g. daily, weekly) covariate data. As such, these results are preliminary and should not be used to make inference on lake condition.
