The Landscape Preservation Maintenance Plan provides a framework for guiding the preservation of important historic landscape features at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. It provides procedures and practices for monitoring change, controlling growth, replacing in-kind, and minimizing disturbance to protect the integrity and character of the historic landscape. The guide was initiated in 1995 with an inspection of trees, shrubs, and vines at the site and incorporates historic information documented in the Cultural Landscape Report. As the document is a landscape preservation maintenance plan, it recommends that features be replaced-in-kind until a comprehensive treatment plan is completed. The plan was intended to be periodically updated and modified as new information is available and the condition of the landscape is evaluated.
