Maintaining the Arlington House landscape is an integral part of George Washington Memorial Parkway’s preservation stewardship along with restoring key landscape elements lost over time. The Landscape Management Plan is a detailed roadmap that outlines the goals and priorities of site maintenance along with long term care and future projects. The Plan’s goal is to maintain a high standard of horticultural care and management that provides optimal growing conditions for the site’s plant material, enhances the ecological health of the site’s environment, and presents a landscape of high quality for visitors. The Landscape Management Plan addresses four primary landscape zones, each requiring its own management strategy addressing annual maintenance, priorities, challenges, and long-term care. A holistic management approach is best applied to the site so that all aspects of the landscape are addressed, the highly visible site is maintained to an exemplary standard, and general maintenance is balanced with long-term projects and priorities. Arlington House is a Greek revival style mansion located in Arlington, Virginia and is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The house overlooks the Potomac River and the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Originally constructed between 1802 and 1818, Arlington House was built to be both the residence of George Washington Parke Custis and as the nation's first memorial to his adopted grandfather, George Washington. This house became the residence of Robert E. Lee and his family before the Civil War. During the American Civil War, the house was seized by the Union Army who proceeded to turn the plantation into a military cemetery that is now known as Arlington National Cemetery.
