The Catholic School Lot, Presbyterian Church Lot, Jefferson's Lot, and Lot 2 all are located on the north side of Shenandoah Street. Lot 1, containing Park Building 45, forms the eastern boundary of the school lot, while the Presbyterian Church Lot forms the western boundary. To the west of the church lot is Jefferson's Lot, which is bounded on its westerly side by Lot 2, containing Park Building 48. South Cliff Street (a paper street on top the cliff) provides the northern boundary for three of these lots, and St Peter's Roman Catholic Church property provides the northern boundary of the school lot. With the exception of Park Building 45B at the far eastern corner of the Catholic School Lot, no buildings are located on three of the lots, or the portion of Lot 2 addressed in this report. Ruins of the Presbyterian Church the stone wall running parallel to Shenandoah Street from the church to Lot 1, and the westernmost house on Lot 2 are extant. Neither Jefferson's Rock nor Park Building 48 will be addressed in the present report. This report covers the history of the Lower Town portions of the Catholic School Lot, Presbyterian Church Lot, Jefferson's Lot, and the remaining Lower Town portion of Lot from 1796 to acquisition of the property by the Park in the 1950s. For the brief period when houses erected by or for armory workers stood on these lots, the term "House No __" is used to identify the buildings, when possible. Charles Snell developed this designation based on armory rent rolls from the late 1840s and early 1850s, and he used these numbers in his report on these lots. Only two buildings (the former Catholic schoolhouse and shed) stood into the Park era and therefore, received Park Building numbers (Park Buildings 47 and 46 respectively). Because the Park quickly tore these buildings down, making use of the term "Park Building __" unnecessary, these buildings are only referenced by their Park building numbers for the discussion of the 1950s.
