The White Pass Historic Transportation System Cultural Landscape Report (White Pass CLR) provides a greater understanding of the extant landscape characteristics and features and their relationship to the historic period; ensures that ongoing and future planning efforts reflect The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes; and establishes a foundation for approval by the National Park Service (NPS), Alaska Office of History and Archeology (OHA), and Alaska State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for future planning and management decisions associated with the National Historic Landmark property. This Cultural Landscape Report: • Deepens our understanding of the site’s history as it relates to the cultural landscape; • Develops a plan and graphic images depicting the landscape during the historic period that will serve planning and management efforts and enhances future interpretation and educational materials; • Identifies the existing condition of the site’s cultural landscape characteristics and features and develops mitigation measures for any features that are compromised; • Establishes planning principles and guidelines that both preserve the site’s historic character and supports its current and future use and function; and • Carefully guides the addition of any new facilities and/or functions that are sensitive to the site’s historic use and character.
