This SOP provides direction on conducting summer sampling focused on counting several species of bats which roost in caves. These counts are used to assess abundance and infer population trends of bats among sampled caves. Multiple visit and multiple observer methods will be employed to collect summer bat data—this will allow the use of hierarchical models and estimation of detectability. The methods in this SOP focus on annual and four-year rotating nocturnal bat emergence counts conducted by observers or video imagery equipment stationed outside a cave entrance(s).
