NPS-28: Cultural Resources Management Guideline, Release No. 1
National Park Service Cultural Resources Division. 1980. NPS-28: Cultural Resources Management Guideline, Release No. 1. Cultural Landscape Guidance Documents. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
This Cultural Resources Management Guideline is the first guidance in the NPS directives system for the management of cultural resources. The guidance encompasses Archeology, Historic Structures and Museum Collections as types of cultural resources. It does not recognize Cultural Landscapes or Ethnographic Resources as types of cultural resources. This Cultural Resources Management Guideline is organized to show the research, planning, and treatment that are needed a) at each stage of management; b) to comply with environmental and historic preservation law, regulation, and policy; and c) to respond to specific resource preservation needs. It provides overall direction and standards for the management of cultural resources in the National Park System, for use by cultural resources management professionals. The Guideline was derived from the NPS Management Policies. The Cultural Resources Management Guideline, Amendment No. 1 was released March 13, 1981. It consists of pages which are to be substituted in the existing guideline. The updates represent the outcome of discussions with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The Guideline and Amendment are each preceded by a Guideline Transmittal Sheet.
