Mackintosh B. 1985. The National Parks: Shaping the System. 1st Edition. Division of Publications, National Park Service. Washington, DC
This book tells the story of the evolution of the U.S. National Park System, the first of its kind in the world. In Part 1 Bureau Historian Barry Mackintosh pays tribute to an earlier history, Family Tree of the National Park Service by Ronald Lee, and discusses the complexity of the Systems origins and designations. In Part 2, Shaping the System, Mackintosh chronicles the step-by-step growth of the System from its beginnings up to 1984. Part 3 contains maps depicting the System's growth through the years up to 1984, and a listing of areas outside of but affiliated with the System.
