Mackintosh B. 1991. The National Parks: Shaping the System. 2nd Edition. Division of Publications, National Park Service. Washington, DC

This book tells the story of the evolution of the U.S. National Park System, the first of its kind in the world. In Part 1, Bureau Historian Barry Mackintosh discusses the origins of the System and describes the complexity of the System's designations. In Part 2 he chronicles the step-by-step growth of the System from its beginnings up to 1991. Part 3 contains maps showing the extent of the System, a listing of areas outside but affiliated with the System, and a list of all National Park Service directors with their tenures. An index completes the book. This revised edition of Shaping the System, which was first published in 1985, is produced on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the National Park Service, 1916-1991.
