This Historic Structure Report contains historical data, architectural data, and treatment recommendations for the Superintendent's Lodge at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, named Custer Battlefield National Monument at the time of publication. The creation of a national cemetery was announced on August 1, 1879 and placed under the care of the U.S. Army. The first Superintendent was stationed at the cemetery in 1893, and the following year the two-story stone Lodge was constructed by the Army. The construction history of the Lodge is characterized by gradual change through its lifespan and the building was reported to retain much of its original character. The national cemetery, including the lodge, was maintained by the War Department until July 1, 1940 until it was turned over to the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The report includes drawings for the Lodge, photos, and construction specifications for labor and materials.
