Horace M. Albright, Director of the National Park Service (1929-1933) recounts the origins of the idea that the National Park Service should be administering historic sites managed by other Federal Departments, primarily the Department of War. He also discusses how he worked with others behind the scenes to get the White House to draft, and President Roosevelt to sign, an Executive Order transferring administration of Federally managed historic sites to the National Park Service. In addition he discusses the creation of the position of Chief Historian of the National Park Service and the selection of Verne E. Chatelain as the first Chief Historian.
