The purpose of this Special History Report was to emphasize Albert Gallatin's contributions to American political, financial, diplomatic, cultural, and scientific history. Over the course of his life Gallatin served in the Pennsylvania State Assembly and later represented Pennsylvania as a U.S. Congressman and then a Senator. He was appointed U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and served under two Presidents - Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. As a U.S. diplomat he helped to negotiate the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. In later years he was instrumental in getting Congress to charter the Second Bank of the United States, served as the U.S. Ambassador to France, was president of the National Bank of New York, and help found New York University. Gallatin was also a well-known ethnologist. In 1826 he published A Table of Indian Languages of the United States followed a decade later by the monumental and influential work A Synopsis of the Indian Tribes within the United States East of the Rocky Mountains and in the British and Russian Possessions in North America. His later research included examinations of various Indigenous societies in Mexico and Central America. He also co-founded the American Ethnological Society, the oldest professional anthropological organization in the United States.
