This document presents the Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for Grand Marais United States Coast Guard Lifesaving Station (Grand Marais USCG Lifesaving Station) within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (PIRO) in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This CLR is the primary treatment document for the cultural landscape associated with the Grand Marais USCG Lifesaving Station. In conjunction with the Historic Structure Report (HSR), this CLR will serve as a record of the history of the property including pre-United States Life-Saving Service and United States Lighthouse Board development, USCG development, and the present-day NPS and USCG ownership. The two documents will provide guidance for the long-term care of the site. A cohesive treatment for the buildings and cultural landscape will provide guidance for repair, additions and upgrades, and preservation of features that support operational and visitor uses. This CLR presents detailed documentation of Grand Marais USCG Lifesaving Station’s historical development, existing condition, analysis of integrity and identification of contributing features. The separate Historic Structures Report (HSR) presents the development, condition, and treatment for the historic buildings. This document establishes a treatment philosophy and treatment recommendations to guide long-term care and stewardship of the cultural landscape. Recommendations support operational and visitor use, enhance resource condition, and support interpretative programming. The CLR describes six periods of landscape development that describe the physical evolution of the Grand Marais USCG Lifesaving Station cultural landscape from the earliest use of the area by American Indian groups through present-day. Two of these periods describe the period of significance (1895-1961).
