Estuarine Nutrient Enrichment Monitoring Data Analysis—Trend Analysis for Northeast Coastal and Barrier (NCBN) I&M Network Parks

Peck CP and Duffy P. Estuarine Nutrient Enrichment Monitoring Data Analysis—Trend Analysis for Northeast Coastal and Barrier (NCBN) I&M Network Parks. 2020-2023

This project involves the analysis of spatially and temporally varying water quality and seagrass monitoring data to better understand the status and trends in estuary health for the national parks within the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN). Water quality data are collected biennially from six of the NCBN parks: Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS), Gateway National Recreation Area (GATE), Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), George Washington National Monument (GEWA), and Colonial National Historical Park (COLO). Seagrass data are collected annually from three of the parks (CACO, FIIS, ASIS). (Additionally, CACO water quality was monitored annually from 2007-2014 and FIIS water quality was monitored annually from 2013-2017). The purpose of the monitoring is to understand the status and trends of estuarine nutrient enrichment (ENE) within the NCBN national parks. Data have been collected at the national parks following a consistent protocol since 2003. The data analyzed for this work span 2003-2021. The broad objectives of the project are to: 1) Evaluate estuarine water quality condition through the application of weighted averages – averages based on the proportion of estuary represented by individual sample points. 2) Evaluate trends in water quality parameters. 3) Evaluate trends in seagrass condition parameters 4) Conduct simulations and power analyses to determine the frequency of change over time, and help evaluate the monitoring program and answer the following question: Is the frequency of sampling appropriate or is there “over” or “under” sampling?
