A history of National Monuments, the National Forest Service, and tangentially the National Park Service. The study discusses the history of the creation of national monuments, how this came to be and how it has developed over time. It looks at the creation by executive order of national monuments from national forest service land and how many of those monuments are placed under National Park Service administration thus transferring Forest Service lands to the National Park Service. The study also looks at the Antiquities Act of 1906 and how it has allowed US Presidents to establish national monuments. Many of these have, in turn, become national park units. In addition, the study includes a discussion of how the Act has been legally interpreted to date (2003). A table contains a list of US presidents from Theodore Roosevelt to William J. Clinton and the numbers and acreage each president proclaimed (established) as national monuments. A second table lists all of the lands - both national forest and other - that became national monuments and/or national parks. Each land unit includes a timeline of when it became a national monument and/or entered the NPS and any major land additions or name/boundary changes. The list also includes lands that were deaccessioned, transferred, or authorized but never came under federal control.
