National Parks for the 21st Century, commonly referred to as The Vail Agenda, was the final report from the 1991 National Park Service's 75th Anniversary Symposium. The Symposium was guided by a Steering Committee charged with preparing a comprehensive final report and set of recommendations for improved park system stewardship and National Park Service management. The report was intended for the Director of the National Park Service. It identified a variety of issues for the Service and presented the recommendations and mandates for action (six strategic objectives) that emerged from the Symposium. The 75th Anniversary Symposium was a working congress of individuals and experts with strong interests in the issues and challenges faced by the National Park Service and the National Park System. Its purpose was to allow a process for evaluation of National Park programs by people both inside and outside the government and to identify opportunities to improve the Service's ability to move forward in to the 21st century.
