This standard operating procedure (SOP) documents data collection for overall plant species diversity, cover and tree seedling/sapling counts in nested subplots within the 20 × 20 meter (65.6 × 65.6 feet [ft]) plot. Quantitative data are collected in eight sets of nested subplots, the 10 × 10 meter (32.8 × 32.8 ft) module, and the entire 20 × 20 meter plot following a modified Carolina Vegetation Survey approach (Lee et al. 2008). While the tree measurements will help us understand long term patterns, the herbaceous measurements will potentially alert us to short term patterns and changes in the vegetation. As stressors affect the vegetation, seedling and herbaceous species composition and structure will respond more quickly than will large trees, coarse woody debris, or other measures we are actively monitoring. The data will help to discern trends including invasive exotic plant species numbers and seedling regeneration rates for key canopy tree species.
