Howser House: Cultural Landscape Report, Kings Mountain National Military Park

WLA. 2023. Howser House: Cultural Landscape Report, Kings Mountain National Military Park. Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service. Atlanta, GA

This cultural landscape report (CLR) for the Howser Farmstead cultural landscape at Kings Mountain National Military Park documents the cultural landscape and its changes through time, and it provides treatment recommendations as a baseline planning document that supports management decisions centered on historic significance, integrity, and the needs of contemporary park management. The Howser Farmstead landscape encompasses approximately 402 acres on the northwestern boundary of Kings Mountain NMP. The Howser Farmstead is significant under National Register Criterion C “as a rare example, particularly as far south as South Carolina, of the process of acculturation manifested in Germanic architectural forms." It is also significant under Criterion A for its association with the agricultural land use and settlement patterns of the South Carolina Piedmont. This report builds on previous documentation and investigations and is a result of the Resource Stewardship Strategy (RSS) for Kings Mountain NMP recommendation for a baseline planning document that addresses the Howser Farmstead cultural landscape specifically. The CLR uses guidance from the current versions of federal guidance and standards documents. Additional resources for the CLR include park management documents, secondary historical resources, and primary historical research. This CLR provides Kings Mountain NMP with the identification of character-defining features, documentation of historic and existing conditions, and development of treatment recommendations to ensure the future protection of the Howser Farmstead landscape and its natural and cultural resources. The overarching treatment recommended for the historic landscape is Rehabilitation.
