Historic Resources Report: Jackson's Right Flank / School House Ridge, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Griffith AJ. 2003. Historic Resources Report: Jackson's Right Flank / School House Ridge, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

This Historic Resources Report is an investigation of the history and features of Jackson's Right Flank, part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Features of the site demonstrate its significant agricultural and industrial history, beginning in the mid-1800s. The landscape became a battleground during the Civil War and served as "Stonewall" Jackson's commanding post during his siege of Harpers Ferry in 1862. After the Civil War, the land returned to agricultural production. In the early 1900s, quarry workers for the Standard Lime and Stone Company, many of whom were Italian immigrants, lived in company housing in Millville. In addition to residences, the site also had churches, grocery stores, a post office, and a baseball field. The report suggests that this landscape conveys the importance of agricultural and industrial development in the area, and that documenting and preserving the remaining resources will help to tell more history about Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The NPS purchased the property in 2002. At the time of the report, the site contained the ruins of thirty-one structures, including houses and outbuildings, the oldest remains dating from 1875. The Harpers Ferry National Historical Park initiated an agricultural lease program on the land, returning it to its historic function. This report was completed in preparation for a National Register of Historic Places nomination form for the property and was intended to serve as a basis for future cultural resource management and interpretation plans. The author was a Partners in Parks intern at Harpers Ferry Historical Park in summer 2003.
