Cultural Landscape Report: Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument
National Park Service, DHM Design Corporation, ERO Resources Corporation, Beyer Blinder Bell Architects and Planners LLP. 2023. Cultural Landscape Report: Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument. Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service. Interior Region 2 South Atlantic-Gulf
The purpose of this Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) is to research, document, evaluate, and provide treatment recommendations and guidance for the physical landscapes associated with the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument within the Medgar Evers Historic District. The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument comprises two component landscapes: the Medgar and Myrlie Evers House National Historic Landmark (Medgar and Myrlie Evers House NHL) and the Missouri Street Lots. The Medgar and Myrlie Evers House NHL is significant as the site of Medgar Evers’s assassination and for its association with Medgar and Myrlie Evers, two African American advocates of civil rights who advanced the movement on a national level. The CLR builds upon existing documentation of the landscape and discusses the range of treatment needs and objectives for the park. The recommended treatment approach is rehabilitation, focused on preserving and maintaining the landscape characteristics that define the historic character while supporting access, safety, and interpretation. The CLR is organized in two parts. Part 1 contains detailed documentation of the historical development of the study area landscape, an evaluation of existing landscape conditions, and an analysis of integrity with identification of contributing features. Part 2 identifies an appropriate landscape treatment approach, consistent with the landscape’s significance, condition, and use. A concurrent Historic Structures Report (HSR) and Environmental Assessment (EA) under the National Environmental support this CLR and evaluate alternatives for the development of the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument for public visitation.
