This property is the subject of a pending National Historic Landmark nomination. The March 2024 draft of the National Historic Landmark nomination for the F. W. Woolworth Company Building will be considered by the Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board (NPSAB) at its meeting on May 14-15, 2024. The Landmarks Committee will evaluate whether to advise the NPSAB to recommend that the Secretary of the Interior proceed with designation. The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the F. W. Woolworth Company Building in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 as the location of the Greensboro sit-ins that launched the nationwide sit-in movement to protest racial discrimination in public accommodations, marked a shift in leadership of the civil rights movement, and inspired other protest movements in the 1960s. The period of national significance is February 1, 1960 to July 25, 1960.
