Quinn Evans. 2023. Shaifer House Historic Structure Report, Vicksburg National Military Park. Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service. NPS Interior Region 2, Atlanta, Georgia
This Historic Structure Report (HSR) prepared for the Shaifer House located in Vicksburg National Military Park. The HSR documents the historical development, current conditions, and significance/integrity of the Shaifer House, and recommends options for its treatment and use to meet the National Park Service’s management objectives. The HSR is divided into two sections. Part I: Developmental History, documents the property’s historical background and context and its chronology of development and use, describes and assesses its physical conditions, and evaluates its significance and integrity. Part II: Treatment and Use, reviews requirements for treatment, presents an ultimate treatment and use, including evaluating alternatives for treatment, and provides recommendations for treatment, including resilience to natural hazards. The report also includes a bibliography and applicable appendices. The Shaifer House is historically significant as the only extant building associated with the Battle of Port Gibson, a key engagement in the Civil War’s Vicksburg campaign. The Union’s victory at Port Gibson solidified General Ulysses S. Grant’s foothold in Mississippi, enabling the Union to gain control of Vicksburg and the Mississippi River, an event widely acknowledged by historians as an important turning point in the Civil War. The period of significance is May 1, 1863.
