Cultural Landscape Report: Carl Sandburg National Historic Site
WLA Studio. 2023. Cultural Landscape Report: Carl Sandburg National Historic Site. Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service. Atlanta, Georgia
This Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) is for the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (CARL) located in Flat Rock, Henderson County, North Carolina. The Sandburg family purchased the property in 1945, and after renovations it served as their primary residence between 1946 and 1967. The site commemorates the nationally significant American poet, historian, and activist, Carl Sandburg. The site is also significant for its reflection of landscape design styles popular in the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Serving as a summer estate for several wealthy families, the landscape was developed in keeping with the Beautiful and Country Place aesthetics. The subsequent contributions to the landscape made by Paula Sandburg are also significant as they reflect the time in which the Sandburgs lived and worked at the property. Throughout its ownership, the NPS has stewarded the historic landscape, also known as Connemara, maintaining and interpreting the site to reflect the Sandburg Period (1945-1967). This CLR aims to synthesize our understanding of the cultural landscape of the site and offer recommendations to guide its future use. The site history section of this report organizes the site into periods of development. These periods reflect both broad themes in regional history as well as specific events related to the ownership of the project site. Using information gathered during site documentation field work, this CLR identifies landscape characteristics and associated features that contribute to the historic significance of the site. It compares the historic condition of a particular resource with its current condition to evaluate its historic integrity. The overall treatment goal is to improve the interpretation of the Carl Sandburg Home cultural landscape by restoring, preserving, and/or rehabilitating the character-defining elements of the cultural landscape as they existed during the period of significance.
