The Freedom Riders National Monument, located in Anniston, Alabama, is composed of two sites. The first is the former Greyhound bus terminal where, on Sunday, May 14, 1961, a group of segregationists attacked a bus carrying African American and White Freedom Riders. The second is the site almost six miles to the west of central Anniston where the segregationist mob continued its attack on the fleeing bus, setting it on fire. The documentation included in this Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) forms the basis for recommendations for management, maintenance, treatment, use, and interpretation of the landscape consistent with the historical significance of the site. CLRs serve as principal treatment tools for the long-term management of cultural landscapes in the NPS system. This CLR was one of the planning needs was recommended by the 2018 Freedom Riders National Monument Foundation Document. The Site History chapter describes the history of the region and locality of the park, then provides more specific information about the evolution of the cultural landscapes of the national monument’s two sites. Existing Conditions describes the environmental, cultural, and political contexts of the park, then provides more specific information about the existing conditions of the two sites in 2021 and 2022. Analysis and Evaluation clarifies their potential National Register significance and determines their integrity through a comparison of historic and existing conditions. Treatment Recommendations presents guidance for the management and treatment of the park and the two sites based on issues identified by the National Park Service during the implementation of the CLR project. The report identifies ten implementation projects.
