Crystal Cave, in Sequoia National Park, is a three-mile-long cave set at about 4,300 feet in elevation. It was formed over time in a narrow band of marble due to the subterranean diversion of Yucca Creek, a tributary of Cascade Creek. There are more than 200 caves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, but the National Park Service (NPS) only allows commercial tours at Crystal Cave. A trail originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1938 and 1941 facilitates the popular tours offered by the park in summer. Nearly 4 million people have toured the cave since it opened to park visitors in 1940. The historic district was determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
