This Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for the cultural landscape at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site: 1. Provides a comprehensive physical site history from pre-contact to the present that includes regional context as well as use of the cultural landscape as a farm and the social history of enslaved African Americans by the Dent/Grant family 2. Assesses landscape integrity and establishes a list of contributing features associated with Grant’s ownership of the White Haven farm 3. Assesses landscape significance and integrity and establishes a list of contributing features associated with Grant’s ownership of the White Haven farm 4. Documents the current physical conditions at White Haven (park unit) to identify ongoing resource threats and resulting impacts, such as tree inventory, drainage and erosion patterns, deferred maintenance, and external impacts from the surrounding neighborhood 5. Identifies the preferred treatment approach of rehabilitation for the cultural landscape 6. Provides a clear direction for accommodating visitor use within the cultural landscape while complying with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Preservation and Rehabilitation and implementing best landscape maintenance practices 7. Proposes design recommendations for site treatment that protect resources and are complaint with ADA and ABA Guidelines for Facilities and Buildings; Recreation Facilities; Outdoor Developed Areas and/or Shared Use Paths 8. Provides general direction for implementing vegetation maintenance and management 9. Identifies priorities for recommended treatment to address current and future visitor needs Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site is a 9.65-acre site that was legislated as a park unit on October 2, 1989. The White Haven house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 1979 and was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) on June 23, 1986. The 2016 Foundation Document for the park identifies the site’s significance: “Although Ulysses S. Grant resided in numerous locations throughout his life, White Haven (from 1854 to 1859) is the only place where Grant lived alongside enslaved African Americans. Grant’s experiences with enslaved African Americans are crucial to understanding his views as the general who won the Civil War and as a president who championed civil rights.”
