The Muir Woods Developed Area at Muir Woods National Monument is not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) because it is not significant for its association with the National Park Service’s (NPS) Mission 66 era of park planning and construction. The developed area’s boundary partially overlaps with the Muir Woods National Monument Historic District, which was listed in the NRHP in 2007. Many of the developed area’s features – both within and outside the existing historic district boundary -- were established during the national monument historic district’s period of significance (1907-1947) and altered during the Mission 66 era (1945-1972) to meet modern standards and the demands of increased visitation. Mission 66 era alterations were designed to provide more efficient visitor flow while conserving the monument’s natural resources. Ten features in the developed area were previously listed in the NRHP as contributing features to the Muir Woods National Monument Historic District: Administration-Concession building, Ben Johnson Trail, Bohemian Grove Trail, Dipsea Trail, Redwood Creek Trail, Service Drive (Old Muir Woods Road), Fern Creek Bridge, Wood Bridges #1 and #2, and Redwood Cross-Section Pavilion. The Dipsea Trail was listed in 2010 as a separate property.
