Killion JT and Coffin Brown M. 2014. Cultural Landscape Report for Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District, Yellowstone National Park (FINAL REVIEW DRAFT). Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service, Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation. Boston, MA
The project area for this report is the Mammoth developed area, encompassing the 158-acre Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District. The district includes Fort Yellowstone and concession areas comprising Upper Mammoth and a portion of a park residential development and a public campground that is part of Lower Mammoth. The report examines the landscape including and immediately surrounding the historic district, including Capitol Hill, Kite Hill, and the lower portions of the Mammoth Hot Springs terraces. These areas were important in the early development of Mammoth and continue to enhance the setting of the historic district. The report does not specifically evaluate built features associated with the Mammoth Hot Springs terraces, such as Upper Terrace Drive, overlooks, and the system of elevated walkways. This draft document addresses the following five main objectives. First is to document the physical evolution of Mammoth in the context of the overall development of the park. Second, to depict the landscape through successive historic periods up to present with period plans and describe the period of significance associated with the landscape. Third, the report documents the existing conditions [2014] of the landscape setting, characteristics, and features through text, photographs, and graphic plans. Fourth is to compare the findings from the site history and existing conditions to identify the landscape characteristics and features contributing to the historical significance of the landscape. The fifth objective is to provide documentation supporting park consultation responsibilities under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
