This document is updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for the Carrie Blast Furnaces Number 6 and 7 National Historic Landmark in Swissvale, Rankin, Munhall, and Whitaker Boroughs, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The updated NHL documentation for the Carrie Blast Furnaces Number 6 and 7 documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4 for its exceptional ability to illustrate the dominant technological concepts of American ironmaking at an integrated steel works during the first half of the twentieth century. Integrated steel works were large-scale facilities that included all steps required to process raw iron ore into finished steel coils. Additionally, the property is significant under NHL Criterion 1 for its ability to clearly illustrate nationally important aspects of American industrial production. The period of significance for the district under both criteria is 1906 to 1941. The beginning date is the year construction began on Furnaces 6 and 7 (they were completed the following year). The end date marks America’s entry into World War II, which ended the period of dominant technological advances in iron production associated with these two furnaces.
