This document is the National Historic Landmark nomination for the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission Chapel National Historic Landmark in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. The NHL nomination for the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission Chapel (McDonnell Hall) documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 2. From 1953 to 1958, the chapel building was home to the Community Service Organization, the most important Mexican American civil rights organization of the early Cold War era. The chapel connected the Mexican American civil rights movement, Catholic ministry to ethnic Mexicans, and efforts to organize ethnic Mexican farmworkers. It is also associated with the emergence of Cesar Chavez as a community organizer, civil rights leader, and labor rights leader. The period of national significance is 1953-1958.
