Cultural Landscape Report: Greenbelt Park

Mundus Bishop, Biohabitats, RATIO Architects. 2024. Cultural Landscape Report: Greenbelt Park. Cultural Landscape Report. National Park Service. Washington, DC

This document presents the Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for Greenbelt Park (the park). The park includes picnic areas, campgrounds, trails, roads, maintenance and administrative headquarters, and a U.S. Park Police Substation mostly planned, designed, and built during the New Deal and Mission 66/Parkscape USA. Greenbelt Park, a unit of National Capital Parks-East (NACE), is a part of the Anacostia River Watershed. This CLR is the primary treatment document for the cultural landscape. This CLR presents detailed documentation of historical development, existing condition, analysis of integrity, and identification of contributing features. This document establishes a treatment philosophy and treatment recommendations to guide long-term care and stewardship of the cultural landscape. Greenbelt Park Located 12 miles northeast of downtown Washington, D.C., and 23 miles southwest of Baltimore, Maryland, Greenbelt Park's 1,100 acres of open space and high-quality forest are part of a comprehensive system of urban parks that provide recreational experiences, preserve forest, and protect source water within the National Capital Region. The park serves as an ecological buffer between heavily developed areas and tributaries of the Anacostia River Watershed, protecting water quality and ecosystem resiliency. Greenbelt Park's location along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and I-95 (Capital Beltway) makes it easily accessible to metropolitan residents and visitors to the nation's capital.
