This Cultural Landscape Report relates the history of a particular corridor of land, its commemorative associations, and its transformation over time into the cultural landscape known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. The Potomac River corridor's strategic role in the nation's history is presented as backdrop for the nineteenth century movement to commemorate George Washington's home. An account of the early proposals for building a memorial road is followed by a chronicling of the events culminating in the opening of the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in 1932, the two hundredth anniversary of Washington's birth. The vital physical features which collectively characterize the Highway's landscape are described and documented in teh second volume of the study. This segment draws on archival resources and site observations as a means of establishing criteria for the National Park Service to assess the existing conditions and to evaluate future interventions. The study concludes with an annotated bibliography which provides ready access to the drawings and reports of the original design team, many of which are located in the National Archives.
