This report provides a description of the historic and contemporary landscape of the Stuart's Hill Tract at Manassas National Battlefield Park, a site associated with the Second Battle of Manassas in 1862, including recommendations for a cultural landscape restoration plan. It contains information on the area; the landscape conditions at the time of study (land use patterns, woodlands, open fields, wetlands, natural resource values); the historic landscape (maps and other sources, 20th century maps and aerial photographs, landforms and streams, roads and farmsteads, woodlands, open fields); historical significance and integrity; preservation and restoration strategies; and evaluation of alternatives. The objectives of the project are: 1) to review and summarize available archival sources and conduct fieldwork to ascertain historical characteristics during the Civil War, condition of the area prior to recent construction, and present condition of the area acquired by the NPS; and 2) to employ information obtained through this research to prepare and implement a cultural landscape restoration plan to investigate and mitigate impact of recent construction activities. This document is annotated with edits and comments. It is intended to be the first part of a two-part project, followed by plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
