The issue of transportation in the context of Glacier National Park is more complicated than it seems. A portion of this complexity derives from the nature of transportation itself: simultaneously it is causative and resultant; it operates on levels much broader than that of local events. Furthermore, in the case of Glacier, significant transportation routes historically preceded the establishment of the Park. The topic's intricacy also is enhanced because accessibility within the Park, after 1910, is a managed, rather than a spontaneous, development. Despite this complexity, a study of transportation to/within Glacier is revelatory–not only does it intersect all of the Park's major historical themes, but it also provides a realistic arena in which entrenched philosophical forces continue to battle. The scope of this study is quite broad. It comprises a detailed history of transportation to and within Glacier National Park, a historical narrative of the creation of Waterton/Glacier International Peace Park, and the completion of a survey of privately-owned structures in the Lake McDonald Area of Glacier Park. Part I of the report includes the historical narrative, while Part II presents the findings of the structures survey. This Historic Resources Study is intended to satisfy the interpretive needs of the National Park Service (regarding transportation history) and to fulfill cultural resource requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act (1966) and Executive Order 11593.
