A preliminary survey of early buildings on Lower Cape Cod was made by the author between July 24 and August 11, 1959, as a special project of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). The study was conducted within the scope of Mission 66. It was undertaken in order to determine the number, location, and condition of any historic structures which might lie within the limits of the proposed Cape Cod National Seashore, as well as to determine whether there was architecture of significant interest and character to justify a HABS summer recording project. Approximately seventy buildings of architectural-historical value were identified within the boundaries of the proposed seashore. A systematic attempt was made to look at every building within the proposed boundaries of the park unit, particularly in Eastham, Wellfleet, and Truro. The report presents an inventory of buildings with maps, notes on the Cape Cod House style, and interior and exterior photographs.
