This dune stabilization study includes diagrammatic illustrations that present the erosion of barrier dunes in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, showing the sequence of events leading to the existing conditions and three example of corrective engineering. Plate I compares the natural barrier island to the stabilized barrier island. Plate II shows the stabilization process. Plate III shows the fully stabilized system. Plate IV shows severe stress conditions. Erosion control methods may be designed to 1) inhibit the direct impact of waves, such as sea walls and revetments, 2) inhibit currents that transport sand, such as jetties and groins, and 3) artificial beach nourishment.
