This report, created four years after the establishment of the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, surveys the major historic structures present on the Slateford Farm complex. Extensive structural histories, treatment philosophies, and recommendations for restoration are given for four major buildings on the complex (The Cabin, The Spring House, The Main House, and The Woodshed), while briefer restoration recommendations are outlined for miscellaneous other features of the complex. The report gives a historical background to the Slateford Farm complex, tracking its various owners and uses from its granting to Nicholas Schull in 1753 to the U.S. Army Crops of Engineers' purchase of the tract. Batcheler suggests that its variety of uses is representative of a common cycle of land use in the Ponoco Mountain region, demonstrating the progression from pioneering, to farming, to mining, and to summer resident use as fields reverted to wild growth. Treatment philosophies and interpretive goals recommend removing 20th century additions that endanger the integrity of the structures, returning the buildings to a facsimile of their 1870s appearances, which serve the interpretive purpose of demonstrating the interrelation of farming and slate mining. Owing to the extensive scope of restoration needs, the report recommends a gradual/phased restoration schedule, in which all restoration actions are undertaken only when present materials have outlived usefulness.
