North Coast and Cascades Inventory and Monitoring Network (NCCN).

North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program is designed to improve park management through greater reliance on scientific information. The NCCN has 14 approved protocols for projects that are considered vital signs for long term monitoring within the NCCN parks. The North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) is composed of seven park units including three large, predominantly natural areas: Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, and North Cascades National Park Service Complex and four, smaller, predominantly historic areas: Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, San Juan Island National Historical Park, Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, and Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. Olympic National Park is a World Heritage Site and a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve. The network organization facilitates collaboration, information sharing, and economies of scale for inventory and monitoring projects. Also see the Data Store Program reference: https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2308561 The primary goals of the I&M Program are to: *Inventory the natural resources under National Park Service stewardship to determine their nature and status. *Monitor park ecosystems to better understand their dynamic nature and condition and to provide reference points for comparisons with other, altered environments. *Establish natural resource inventory and monitoring as a standard practice throughout the National Park system that transcends traditional program, activity, and funding boundaries. *Integrate natural resource inventory and monitoring information into National Park Service planning, management, and decision making. *Share National Park Service accomplishments and information with other natural resource organizations and form partnerships for attaining common goals and objectives. Along with numerous inventory projects, the NCCN has 14 approved monitoring protocols. These monitoring projects focus on: climate, fish assemblages, forest vegetation, subalpine vegetation, glaciers, landscape dynamics, landbirds, mountain lakes, intertidal, elk, prairie vegetation, large lowland lakes, and water quality.
