This document, Volume 2 of the Cultural Landscape Report, is the second phase in re-evaluation of the Longfellow National Historic Site landscape. It analyzes the historical significance and integrity of the landscape, evaluating the grounds in relation to other properties which are similar in style and character and identifying character-defining historic features. This follows the 1993 Volume 1 report, which documents the evolution of the property from Colonial times to the present. The report was based on methodology for the preparation of cultural landscape reports recently developed by the NPS, which builds on criteria and procedures established by the National Register of Historic Places. The property has been recognized as nationally significant for its association with George Washington and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and as an outstanding example of Colonial Georgian architecture. The report finds that the landscape contributes to the significance of the property in each of the established areas of significance; it should be recognized as a significant example of early Colonial Revival style of landscape architecture, and it is also noteworthy for its association with landscape architect Martha Brookes Hutcheson.
